Throughout my time as a photographer, I’ve received a few requests for the RAW files of the photographs I’ve shot. To give some background information, RAW files are the files created straight out of my camera. Each camera brand creates its own standard of RAW files, but in general they are flat images (not a lot of contrast) that contain a ton of information. This information can be accessed through Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop, or in my case both!

For example, the image above shows the RAW file on the left and the edited JPG file on the right. Your phone will automatically take JPG photos that are crisp and colorful, but RAW files need some finessing to get there. Photographers who know what they are doing are able to add their own look and feel to each image as they edit.

One thing that sets me apart from other photographers is that I’ve worked as a professional photo editor for years.

My background in photo editing can help transform your image from bland to magical using more than just a simple preset. Here are a  few examples:

I can remove distractions in the background.

Horsetooth Reservoir is a gorgeous location in Fort Collins. However, there is graffiti painted on a handful of rocks. Someone wrote “Noah” in blue paint, which is very distracting and means nothing to the couple. With a little bit of photoshop magic, I was able to remove the graffiti and deliver a beautiful image to the couple. See ya later, Noah!

I will remove unwanted bites, blemishes and bruises.

This couple was so much fun to work with, and they gladly stayed outside during this shoot as it started to rain. Unfortunately, the rain also brought along mosquitos! After getting bit by a mosquito on the forehead, I could confidently tell her not to worry because could remove the bite later.

Whether it’s a stress pimple preparing for your wedding day or a weird bite that just won’t go away, have peace of mind knowing you will look your best because I’ll be there to take care of you.

I know how to preserve the colors of the sunset, while giving you that gorgeous glow.

This is a photo of my family! My sister helped me take my own maternity photos by standing in for me as I dialed in the correct camera settings, and then trading places to snap the shot. I knew I wanted our photos to be colorful, and the sky was giving us a show! By exposing the image for the sunset behind us, I was able to preserve the colors during editing. Remember when I said that RAW files are full of information? Darker parts of images hold more information than lighter parts, so I was able to draw out the correct exposure for my husband, dog and I in Lightroom. You may also notice that I smoothed out the line left from outgrowing my Spanx, because no girl is perfect. 🙂

I’ll use Photoshop to create that perfect family photo.

Children are wiggly! They move fast and they grow up even faster! During family sessions I like to take multiple photos so I can mix and match them while editing. You might not notice, but in these two photos I switched out the little girl’s face from another photo, and I removed the Tucan stuffed animal, creating an image that has less distractions and a great smile from every family member.

Photoshop has a lot of powers, but I prefer images that are real–real love and real reactions. Although I don’t have a problem with using Photoshop to adjust the colors and remove distractions, I promise to never use Photoshop to make someone into someone they are not.

You are beautiful just the way you are!
